Observation of the planet Venus

Retour
Venus

Almost twin to Earth in size, but covered with toxic clouds. It is the hottest planet in the solar system.

Venus, the hottest planet in the solar system.

Characteristics

Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system with 462°C on the surface.
Despite its resemblance to the Earth in terms of size and mass, Venus has an opposite (retrograde) sense of rotation to that of other planets.
Its rotation period is 243 days, which makes it the planet with the slowest rotation.
This slow rotation gives it a negligible flattening resulting in its practically spherical shape.
Its dense atmosphere is at the origin of its temperature, it is enveloped in highly reflective sulphuric acid clouds which make it the 2nd most visible star in the night sky after the Moon.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere of Venus is very dense, composed of 96.5% CO2 and 3.5% nitrogen (N2), making its mass 93 times greater than that of Earth.

Retrograde rotation

We do not yet understand why Venus has a retrograde rotation, the most advanced explanation is that Venus would have been hit by another large body during the phase of formation of the planets of the solar system.
Another hypothesis explains that this could be due to the high density of its atmosphere.
