The red planet, famous for its iron-rich soil. It is home to the largest mountains and canyons in the solar system.
The red planet
Mars is a rocky planet with impact basins and craters on its surface as well as an abundant amount of iron(III) oxide responsible for its red color.
It orbits the Sun in 686.71 Earth days.
It houses Olympus Mons, the highest volcano in the solar system with its height of 22.5 km.
Its two natural sattelites are named Phobos and Deimos
Mars has a very thin atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide (CO2). Dust is constantly injected there by the dust vortices on its surface.
Mars is half as large as the Earth, it has polar caps (a layer of ice present in one or both poles) in its two hemispheres whose size varies over the seasons. Mars has the largest known volcanoes in the solar system: Alba Mons the widest (1600 km) and Olympus Mons the highest (21 229 m).
Mars has two natural satellites: Phobos and Deimos that looks like asteroids.
