Atmosphere
By its gravity, the Earth holds back the atmosphere around it, composed of 78.08% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.934% argon and 0.042% carbon dioxide as well as other gases.
The lowest layer of the atmosphere is located at a height of 8 km at the poles and 17 km at the equator.
Magnetic field
It has a magnetic field generated by convection movements within its core.
This magnetic field (called magnetosphere), protects the Earth by deflecting particles from the solar wind.

The Moon is about 4 times smaller than Earth and is located between 356 400 km and 405 500 km away from Earth.
The gravitational attraction between the Earth and the Moon causes the tides on Earth, and the synchronous rotation of the Moon: it takes as long to turn on itself as to turn around the Earth.
